Get Your Photoshoot Checklist Here
Planning to list your property on a vacation rental platform or refresh your current interior photos? High-quality photos are the key to standing out and attracting guests. Follow these tips to prepare your space and ensure your photoshoot is a success.
1. Clean and Declutter
• Deep clean your space: Wipe down all surfaces, including glass, mirrors, and
stainless steel.
• Remove clutter: Hide personal items, paperwork, or anything distracting from
the room’s features.
• Tidy beds and linens: Make the beds neatly, fluff pillows, and ensure comforters
hang evenly without wrinkles. Avoid storing items in areas that may be seen
from different angles.
• Manage cords: Tuck cords behind furniture or unplug and wrap them neatly
out of sight.
• Hide garbage cans and close toilet lids; these small details make a huge
difference.
Pro tip!:
Clean the space a few days before the shoot. I can't tell you how many times I've arrived to a property where the owner is hectically trying to hang picture frames or still deciding which throw pillows should go in which room. Save yourself the headache and prepare your space in advance; take a few days to assess it. This will also give you time to experiment with furniture arrangement and decor to enhance the flow of the space. Thoughtful composition adds depth and visual interest to your photographs. This will help you ensure everything looks and feels comfortable for your guests and that you’re fully ready for your photoshoot.
2. Let in Natural Light
• Turn off all lights: Ceiling lights can create harsh shadows or unwanted
color casts.
• Open window shades or curtains: Maximize natural light to showcase your
space’s warmth and charm.
3. Stage and Style
Styling your space adds personality and highlights its best features.
• Create an inviting and functional layout that feels natural by arranging
furniture thoughtfully. Also, keep pathways clear.
• Add decorative touches: Fresh flowers, greenery, artwork, throw pillows, and
books bring life to your space and make photos visually appealing.
• Focus on details: Use accessories like candles or blankets to add texture and
warmth without overcrowding the scene.
For outdoor spaces, make sure patios, decks, or gardens are clean and styled with appropriate furniture or décor to create a welcoming vibe.
4. Prepare for the Hero Shot
Your listing’s cover photo (or hero image) is the first thing potential guests notice. It could feature a spacious living room, a modern kitchen, or an inviting outdoor area. Choose the space that best highlights your property’s key selling point to attract more bookings.
Preparing your property for a photoshoot ensures your short term rental makes a great first impression. Clean, declutter, and style your space to help potential guests envision their stay. A good rule of thumb is to keep it simple. I tell my hosts that you don't have to show every fork and knife on your listing page. Choose your property's key selling points and focus on highlighting those features. With the right preparation, you’ll create photos that attract bookings and elevate your listing.
